seeking computer advice…

Hey friends,

Well, my computer is still dead, and I haven’t bought a new one yet. I know this isn’t POTS/chronic illness related, but if you have a laptop you love, I’m dying to hear about it!

I’m going through computer withdrawal over here, but I can’t decide what to get. I primarily use my laptop for blogging, email, and work, so it doesn’t need to be the top of the line, but it needs to be fast and reliable. Any suggestions?

Thanks, friends! I hope to be back posting soon!

Smell ya later.

  1. I went through a lot of laptops because I’d always find that not long after the 12 month guarantee was up something would go wrong! I now have a MacBook and love it and have had no problems at all, but they are so expensive (I had a sale bargain with mine). It’s hard to really suggest brands and types because everyone has their own opinion, but for me I’d not buy an HP ever again. Not that knowing that really helps you! If you find something in your budget that fits what you’re looking for, check online for consumer reviews to see what others say about it as that’s often the best way of finding whether it’ll be any good 🙂

    1. Thanks! My last two laptops (including the one that just crapped out) were HPs, and they had common issues, so I’m looking for something other than HP. Hearing you say the same just confirmed it 🙂

      1. Aah, it’s a shame as HP have some nice designs but they seem poor when it comes to reliability and technological effectiveness (which is what you want when it comes to a laptop!) x

        1. Yes! The new HP Spectre looks cool and I even considered it for a while, but I can’t bring myself to buy another HP. The internal batteries have died in every HP I have owned, and my laptop that crapped out during the bar exam was an HP. I’m over it.

  2. My last 3 laptops have been Acer. They have never let me down and I’ve had each for about 7 years before wanting to upgrade to something quicker. The processor is important – go for the best you can afford, i5 at least though i7 quad core is better.

RAM is also important or the machine will be slow. 8GB is fine for most needs, though 16GB will future proof you more (and cost more!). Lots of people go on about SSDs (solid state drives) but I don’t think they’re particularly important. Same with hard drive space – 500GB is enough unless you’re a photographer (I have a 1TB hard drive which is almost full lol!).

My Acer has an i7 processor, 8GB RAM and a 1TB hard drive and cost around £450 ($600).

  3. I am on my third Toshiba Satellite with no complaints. No weird issues, fast enough, pretty easy to fix if something goes wrong or the cat runs across the keyboard and takes me to uncharted territory. Very easy to add RAM.

  4. I buy a top of the line used Dell laptop from my computer guy. He takes a pricey machine that is being sold due to an upgrade, makes sure everything is running smoothly and we get it for a couple hundred dollars. We had a SSD installed recently and it significantly boosted performance. Unlike Jak, I would recommend one. I’ve always had Dell computers and never regretted it. Right now I’m using a Latitude E6410 and have been for several years. I have not installed Windows 10 on this one.

  5. I got a Chromebook!! I love it! It doesn’t have a hard drive, is faster than fast, no noise, no overheating! Everything is on Cloud, and SAD cards. Only thing it doesn’t have is CD/DVD.
I use it for paying bills, photos, email and Facebook etc. Got Asus Chromebook for $200 on Amazon, my son took it to Europe so he could have a working vacation. Lightweight! I haven’t missed anything! Safest for hacking as no hard drive to hack! If I need it for DVD I can add one via USB cable, but. haven’t needed it. It’s like a MacBook, only it uses Google. Check it out!
